The Homestuck ‘Zine Project
Hi guys! If you were as big of a hipster as I was in high school (or if you remember Reggie from Rocket Power), you’ve probably heard of zines. They’re handmade, self-published assemblages of stuff that usually looks cool on paper. Zines are easy to come by if you go to art school, work at a coffee shop, live in Portland, or own a fixed-speed bicycle— but for the rest of us, they’re not as commonplace. That’s why I want to get a bunch of YOU together to make a Homestuck-themed digital zine that anyone can download and print out!
Who can participate: Anyone who wants to! You don’t have to be a spectacular artist to contribute; in fact, the pages tend to look cooler if they’re messy and spontaneous.
What you can do: Anything that you can put on half a sheet of computer paper (4.25” by 5.5”). Draw a picture, write a drabble, share a recipe or cocktail mix, paste on a cosplay photo, make a PSA in your favorite character’s typing quirk, smear on your unsealed Ben Nye, propose to your girlfriend, tell a funny con story, let your update tears stain the page, declare a ship canon, yell, crumple, spill, paint, and celebrate. Be creative! But keep in mind this is relatively SFW, so nothing too inappropriate please (keep it PG-13).
How you should do it: Make your page and scan it in. You can do things digitally if you really want to, but try something by hand— it’s a lot more fun and charming. All submissions should be 4.25” by 5.5”, 200dpi (check your scanner settings!). Keep in mind that if you do something in color, it will be desaturated upon “publication”. If you want, you can add your tumblr url or nickname on the page. Send your pages to homestuckzineproject@gmail.com by Friday, November 9th.
What you’ll see: When the project is over, a post will be made with a link for downloading the final issue in .pdf format. You’ll be able to print it out and share it with your friends. Congrats! You’re a bona fide Cool Kid.
PS: A lot of the fandom’s out having fun at big cons this weekend, so be sure to pass it on!
I’m a doofus and wrote 300 dpi instead of 200. Here’s a template for the correct size.
